Community Leaders Online Sharing in April and May – Compassionate Leadership in Times of Challenges

Amidst of the challenges arisen from the outbreak of COVID-19, a Community Leaders Online Sharing series was launched to engage prominent community leaders to speak on their pandemic responses and wisdoms for the new normal.

The first Community Leader Online Sharing session in April featured Mr Leong Cheung, Executive Director of Charities and Community of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, who shared his insights on the philanthropic efforts of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust in the critical times. From agile decision making to effective resource mobilisation and partner empowerment, Mr Cheung pinpointed essential leadership challenges and qualities and emphasised the significance of creativity and solidarity in times of crisis. His thought-provoking sharing aroused meaningful discussions on strengthening resilience of the vulnerable on the way forward.

Our subsequent May session, featuring Ms Shalini Mahtani, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of The Zubin Foundation, took a closer look at the needs of the ethnic minority population. Ms Mahtani shared that the minorities was one of the marginalised groups hardest-hit in the pandemic due to poverty and language barrier. While her foundation was at the forefront to offer them health and educational supplies with the support of the Hong Kong Jockey Club COVID-19 Emergency Fund, she concluded from her frontline experience that inclusion was the key to improve lives in the long run.

Words from participating JC Scholars

For sharing by Mr Cheung

I greatly appreciate the servant leadership Mr Cheung illustrated and his energy is truly inspirational. He is a down-to-earth leader and has demonstrated his passion, compassion, humbleness and authenticity through the ups and downs around the globe these days.

The earnest sharing by Mr Cheung encouraged us to reflect ourselves deeply in our social responsibility and leadership.

For sharing by Ms Mahtani

I was motivated by Ms Mahtani for her passion and dedication towards striving equality for the ethnic minorities. It has inspired me to make greater impacts and call for more attention in helping the neglected groups in the society.

Thanks Ms Mahtani for sharing with us how she supports the ethnic minority community in Hong Kong. She has given the ethnic minority community in Hong Kong a voice and made them be heard in the society by inviting more participation and empowering them through education.
